Overview about Leadership

Susan Ward, M.Ed. by the University of British Columbia has written a simple definition about leadership, she explained it is the art of motivating a group of people to act towards achieving a common goal. In a business setting, this can mean directing workers and colleagues with a strategy to meet the company’s needs.[1]

Tony Robbins also say that an appropriate leadership definition is someone using their skills to influence others. They are committed to using time, dedication, consistency and a distinct purpose to achieve their goals. A Leader is an amazing influencer.[2]

Daniel Goleman, known as the father of Emotional Intelligence, argue that a leader’s primal task is an emotional one to articulate a message that resonates with their follower’s emotional reality, with their sense of purpose and so to move people in a positive direction.[3]

Reviewed by W. C. H. Prentice the concept of Leadership means the accomplishment of a goal through the direction of human assistants. The man who successfully marshals his human collaborators to achieve particular ends is a leader. A great leader is one who can do so day-after-day, and year-after-year, in a wide variety of circumstances.[4]

After reading all these concepts, I would like to write my own definition about what leadership means. It is a set of skills that conduct the individuum to be admired and followed. It is someone who is able to motivate and take people out of their comfort zone, with no need to push them, with no conflict, acting harmonically, synergistically, subtly, collaboratively to accomplish company demands in total relation with each people purpose. It is someone that make people part of the big goal. The good leader is an amazing listener.

Beliefs about Leaders and Leadership

On my point of view there is leadership is a skill that everybody must to develop, despite have a team do lead, because the concept of leadership must to be applied in each own life, doing of the self-leadership a way of life. Based on that, there are some characteristics very important to be a good self or team leader.

First, I consider honesty and integrity are the foundations for any kind of success in my view whether that’s in a personal relationship or professionally as a leader. Leaders who walk their talk are coming from a place of integrity. Second is trust, for any team to truly follow a leader, one who inspires them and who they feel they want to support through the highs and lows of business, trust is essential.

Another strong characteristic is the ability to take risks, once leaders who are willing to take more risks than their colleagues will be, in most of the time, more successful. These risks will be considered without getting caught up in the indecision of over analysis. Leaders cannot be afraid of making mistakes. If they do, they learn from them and make sure they don’t repeat them. 

Taking risks, leaders need to be brave, so courage is more than necessary. Leaders, just like anyone else experience challenging times. It is courage that allows successful leaders to overcome challenges consistently and to do the things that others are less willing to do, even when they know, there is no guarantee of success.  

The ability to act with fairness is very important. In my years of experience, I could note that people want to be treated fairly, irrespective of being a colleague, team member or client. Leaders who I have seen and admired have always been able to navigate a path to success in a fair and just way.   

Also, a very important set of characteristics include passion and enthusiasm. A leader’s role is to inspire. This is always easy to do when a leader has genuine passion and enthusiasm for what they are doing. It’s easy to spot incongruence when this is lacking and all you can hear is, “the company talking”. Call it a positive attitude, a can-do attitude, call it what you like, some leaders have an attitude that leaves no place for negativity, they will always look for an aspect of positivity even in the most difficult of circumstances. You are what you believe, so believe in yourself and in your ability to do what everybody is saying that is impossible. Inspire your team, like a true director.

The commitment to development is definitely one of the most important points to be a leader. Being a huge believer and a life-long learner, is what makes successful leaders stand out. This is due to the commitment to their own education as well as to others’ education. They recognize that a business only grows when its people grow too. In my opinion, a leader should be an avid reader, sometimes consuming a book a week. This leader will self-reflect and respond positively to feedback. They will never stop doing what it takes to grow both professionally and personally. Good leaders are also huge supporters of ‘learning’ within their organizations and encourage their team members and colleagues to own their development while investing time in mentoring and sponsoring top talent of their organization. 

Humility is one characteristic very important to me as well, once great leaders are not the classic charismatic types we have always thought. Instead, they have a compelling mixture of humility and will. These are leaders who can ‘leave their ego at the door’ and put any personal interests to one side. Their focus is on what’s best and right for the business rather than pursuing their own agenda, getting caught up in politics or wanting to win a popularity contest.

Of course, we have much more characteristics to be inferred, but those above are very important to me, so, for now, I have asked myself the question, am I walking my talk in terms of values and beliefs as a leader? I have concluded that I´m in line with my purpose, living congruently and creating an environment of trusting, strong believes and action for my family and my team. Keep moving every day and remain with a life-long learner mindset is what make me able to change, for a better direction, always.

Importance

People usually look to leaders to guide them in their actions. Good leaders are role models for the people they lead, motivating them, supporting them and facilitating communications among them. In business, good leadership translates to long-term success with high morale and a high rate of employee retention, avoiding losing talents. In the military, stakes are high for leaders. Successes and failures are not measured in dollars but in lives saved and lost, which demonstrate the real mean of having an extraordinary sense of leadership.

The importance of leadership in society should not be underestimated. People need laws and rules to govern their actions. Organizations of any size take on the personalities of their leaders, so the supposed success will be accomplished, always depending of the leaders. Good leadership helps shape a positive attitude, promotes harmony and facilitates maximum productivity. I always say that leaders exist to bring solutions, not to be involved with the problem. A 360º point of view is truly necessary to be ahead against any disturbed situation.

Some people are born with characteristics that make them natural leaders. Intelligence, drive and an outgoing personality are early indicators of potential success as a leader. However, it is also true that good leadership skills can be developed and learned. Many large organizations, including businesses, the government and the military, offer leadership training as part of their promotion structures. Leaders are developed from within so that they can combine their organizational knowledge with newly acquired skills.

Examples & Development 

I have defined leadership as a set of skills that allow the individual to be admired and followed. Is someone that make people part of the big goal. The good leader is an amazing listener. This single definition fails to define the particular paths and ways of people who are deemed as great leaders. All great leaders had something unique about them and yet they were bound by greatness that helped them to lead masses to innovation and new ideologies.

I always considered some examples in history to mirror my leadership skills and I have developed some important characteristics that were modeled of these great men. The real desire is getting the most important of each one and work hard to build a very strong leader and a valuable man that will positively impact humans’ race. Look at some leaders that are my references.

Jesus Christ was the most important leader for me who taught me the real meaning about being faithful, prayerful, wise, virtuous, humble, obedient, patient, charitable, giving, forgiving and grateful. The desire to strongly develop these characteristics has made me a better man, a better leader.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, better known as Mahatma Gandhi, the non-violence way of doing brought his country to freedom in 1947. His main characteristics were resilience, knowledge, people-skills, motivational approach and leading by example.

George Washington, known as the founding father of the United States of America, was the leader of the American Revolution and the first President of the United States. What made Washington great was his foresight, vision, strategic planning and his ability to lead people to success.

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States is also one of the most well-known leaders for me. He kept people together during the civil war and is the only reason that the nation did not break into smaller parts. He also ended slavery in the US by signing the Emancipation Proclamation. His greatest traits were his determination, persistence, beliefs and courage.

Nelson Mandela was the first South African president elected in fully democratic elections. Mandela was also the main player in the anti-apartheid movements in the country and served a lengthy prison sentence because of the same. He was not stopped and in fact was motivated to devote his life to uniting his country and he successfully managed to do so after his release from an almost 30-year prison sentence. His main characteristics were his determination, persistence, focus and will.

Julius Caesar easily one of the greatest military leaders of all time, Caesar was also one of the best political leaders the world has ever seen. He led several campaigns with numerous victories and was single handedly responsible for the expansion of the Roman Empire. His greatest traits were his decisiveness, boldness, eagerness, motivation, opportunism and strategic planning.

Winston Churchill was Prime Minister of Britain from 1940 to 1945, Churchill led Great Britain against Nazi Germany during the World War II. Churchill was known for his fearlessness, determination, unyielding perseverance and undying devotion to his goal.

Goals

Mistakes are inevitable, but what counts is whether you learn from them. A leader should be confident, but leaders can get into trouble when they assume, they can single-handedly deal with every situation that comes along. Good leaders listen to others more than use their mouth, and they’re willing to keep an open mind when presented with alternative solutions to a problem. A good leader recognizes that one person can’t know it all. There are always new opportunities to learn. Therefore, I will keep my journey to become a better spouse, a better man for humanity and a better leader who is always able to utter the better words to encourage people to become their best version.
